Highrock MetroWest Youth Writer Series: Part 2

Prompt: What is a recent God sighting in your life?

By Ethan Oh, a Highrock MetroWest Highschool Student

This past April, I had the opportunity to go to Mexico with Mision de Caridad to volunteer at their medical fair. The people we were serving were in great poverty and did not have easy access to medical attention. The fair was made possible by teams from both the US and Mexico, and there were so many great things that we were able to accomplish together as a team.

Working with people who spoke little English and held a diverse background from my own, I found that, at first, my interactions with the Mexican team were primarily just business. However, as I worked alongside them over time, they became more than a team from Mexico. We created genuine connections through our like-minded passion for serving those in need. Despite our differences, the community created during this trip was unlike any other I had experienced in the past.

Working on site were medical professionals, translators, scribes, and educators. However, this was only a fraction of the teams that worked to make the fair happen. Support staff from the local churches attended to many essential tasks such as helping set things up, preparing our meals, and transporting necessary equipment between sites. The medical fair brought together people who may never have met ordinarily to serve a common goal of helping others and supporting each other.

I remember one night I had the chance to thank one of the volunteers, who woke up earlier than the crack of dawn, to make sure our team was well nourished for the day. I was very grateful for the work that he had done and decided to share a meal with him. Despite the fact that he did not know English and I knew limited Spanish, we still had a great time learning about each other and didn’t necessarily need a common language to become friends.

Throughout the trip, I saw how God worked through the volunteers by giving us a drive and passion for serving together. By the end of my trip, I didn’t see the Mexico team or the US team. Instead, I saw one community that God had brought together to support and serve those less fortunate than us. I am very grateful for this opportunity and will continue to value the friendships that were made.
