We're Only 3 Counting In-Person Easters!

by Pastor Ryan Marshall

People So Dearly Loved By God,

We’re just a few days away from celebrating Easter and, honestly, I have no idea what to expect. I mean, of course, I am involved in planning a lot of what is going to happen and, spoiler alert, Jesus comes back, so we have that to look forward to! What I mean is, this is the first in-person Easter we’ve celebrated since 2019! And before that, Highrock MetroWest only celebrated one other Easter! If you count our age as a church by Easters celebrated in-person, we’re only 3!

Now, add to that the dark few years we’re emerging from and the changing norms around church attendance and I feel like we’re working through a recipe for a dish that we’re unfamiliar with! I just don’t know what to expect!

I want to invite you into that same perspective. You see, in years past, I would have tried to have a tighter, firmer grip on what should unfold on Easter Sunday. The music should be this way, the liturgy should be that way, and each detail should go according to my plan. The event was, in my mind, very much measured by whether or not things went according to my expectations. But now, perhaps thanks to a few more years under my belt but more likely because of God’s persistent weeding of sin in my heart and mind, I am holding this Easter much more loosely.

We do have some great things planned, and if they go well, it will be so lovely! We’re making music together, speaking words that are carefully chosen, and dedicating some children to God’s tender care. We’re having a party with curated entertainment and delicious food! And if the weather holds, things will be beautiful. But what I am really trying to tune my senses to is what God is doing in the hearts of those who are just getting to know Highrock Church and Jesus.

In the last few months, we have had as many brand new folks come to in-person worship as we’ve had members. We’ve had people from many ethnic, religious, and political backgrounds come to worship in person. We’ve had people from various family structures come to check things out. And not only are people coming to visit us but Highrock is being invited deeper into the life of our surrounding community through initiatives by the town’s Substance Abuse Prevention Network and Youth and Family Services! Something is happening, friends!

This Easter Sunday will be powerful and amazing one way or another, but I’m looking at it as a mile marker on a much longer journey that God is taking us on that is, in so many ways, unexpected.

What we can count on, though, is that God’s resurrection power is at work in us, as it says in Ephesians 1:19-20;

I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe in him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. (NLT)

Whether you’re with us in Needham on Sunday, with Highrock Online (where you’ll catch Jason and me leading music), or somewhere else, I pray that you’ll experience God’s resurrection power in unexpected ways.

A Special Thank You

Sometimes we are tempted to think that ministry is done by pastors and the people receive it. At Highrock MetroWest, we have an incredible number of people doing ministry for each other. And the goal is to increase that more and more. We are so grateful at HRMW for the scores of volunteers who lead worship and tech, pray for us, welcome us into worship, lead our men's and women's ministries, prepare SoulFood, love on our kids in Kidsrock and our youth in Middle and High School ministries; for our many small group leaders and participants, for those who do practical acts of care for each other, for our Guides and Councilors, and those who lead us in compelling outreach projects; and last of all, to the many, many volunteers who are making this Holy Week and Easter celebration possible. We are a church that ministers to each other! Think of your staff, not as the players on the field, but as coaches, who train and equip the people to minister to the people. To God be the glory!
